Here's a useful dictionary to look up words you don't understand from the transcriptTranscriptTobermory is the main town on the Isle of Mull, which is just off the west coast of Scotland. It's a beautiful town on a beautiful island, and first grew up as a fishing village in the year 1788. The layout of the village was designed by the famous engineer Thomas Telford. The first thing you notice when you arrive is the brightly coloured buildings that run along the harbour - fantastic pinks, yellows, reds and blues; it's almost like arriving at the end of a rainbow! This is one of the reasons why Tobermory is often the location for films and television programmes. My daughter, for example, loves a BBC show called Balamory, which is filmed here and features the bright colours of the town. However, people don't come here just to see their favourite children's TV stars - there's so much more to do. For example, anybody interested in Scotch Whisky can visit the distillery at the entrance to the town, which was set up over two hundred years ago in 1798, ten years after the village was first founded. Next, you can visit the splendid golf course. This was built in 1896 and is considered one of the most beautiful in Scotland, if not the world. It is 4474 metres long and has nine holes. After the round, maybe you'd like a whisky from the local distillery. Afterwards, why not visit the Children's Farm, if you've got children of course. It opens at the end of March and closes in the middle of September. Once inside you can feed the lambs, play with the rabbits and play in the activity area. It's a nice visit and only costs three pounds for children, and five pounds for adults. Glengorm Castle is just outside Tobermory and was built in 1860. Once there you can get the fantastic views of the Atlantic Ocean, and on a clear day you can see the Outer Hebrides sixty miles away. The castle is also a hotel which offers traditional Scottish hospitality. There is lots more to see and do, such as boat trips, pony trekking, museum visits; if you come here you will discover it all for yourself. This student worksheet is free to download and print for use in the classroom or for self-study. It is meant to be used in conjunction with the listening file which is available in mp3 format. However, the transcript can be used not only to check answers but also for reading comprehension and vocabulary exercises. |
